Marc Hill, a Pool Parish Councillor, has taken on the difficult task of leading the campaign for improved road safety in Pool.
Leeds City Council’s Highways Department requires evidence of significant risks in an area before they will consider introducing road safety measures. This includes recorded injury data supplied by the police, incidents involving vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclist and motorcyclists, and traffic and speed surveys.
This has not been a simple matter and has taken considerable time and dedication. Marc has accompanied the Police and Highways in conducting speeds surveys and checking potentially dangerous locations in the village. To collect qualitative data regarding road safety concerns a simple QR code system has been introduced for residents to report incidents quickly and easily. You may have seen the QR codes displayed around the crossing near the village shop.
The initiative has been extremely well supported by the community, receiving more than 50 reports each month. The data has been shared with Highways who have subsequently agreed to the replacement of the traffic lights near the Post Office with a safer and more efficient system.
Given the estimated cost is in excess of £15K, it might take some time to secure funding and deliver the improvements. In the meantime, Marc continues his campaign to improve road safety in Pool.
